SFD 2008

The Boys

I just got back from Software Freedom Day, an event promoting and spreading free software worldwide. Locally, it was organized by Nesla, Comunidad TIC, and the company Neurowork. The event was really nice, and I got to meet many Linux friends whom I rarely see, unfortunately.

There were a few high-level talks, such as the one by IP Corp Corrientes, who discussed interacting with PostgreSQL and C/C++.

A representative from Sun also came to talk about OpenSolaris (who threw some light criticism at Linux, as expected). That talk was also interesting.

Finally, Jose Masdeu shared his latest project in the Judicial Power regarding the creation of a Data Center for that organization, implemented 90% with free software. Although he didn’t have time to go into all the details during the talk, I had the chance to talk with him afterward (over a couple of beers) and he showed me the project in detail. I was simply speechless—it’s a very clean and well-structured architecture, truly an enviable project.

At the end, Pedro Cacivio impressed us with his "hacker skills," demonstrating a bit of remote attacks and Ethical Hacking.

The rest of the time was spent talking with people, catching up on news, joking around (:P), and obviously doing nerdy stuff!

Congratulations to the organizers for putting together such a great event—it went really well, at least from my point of view.
